Several years ago Nataša Kočar, a professional oriental dancer and one of the founding members of the KUOD Bayani dance association based in Kamnik, and Sylvia Valentine, a Bharatnatyam and oriental dancer, met during dance rehearsals.
Their artistic careers were marked by being members of the Nataraj dance troupe. They took delight in combining dance elements from oriental cultures and Western dance moves – so much so that they decided to create a joint Bollywood production and in 2008 began to teach Bollywood in Kamnik (KUOD Bayani).
Soon afterwards they co-founded the Bollywood dance troupe SHAKTI.
Through regular courses and organising workshops and events with acknowledged foreign and Slovene teachers, the SHAKTI troupe nurtured a familiarity with Indian art and culture. The dancers thus have the opportunity to practise the classical northern Indian dance form Kathak and the southern Indian dance form Bharatnatyam while following Bollywood dance trends.
